The New Public Charge Rule

On January 27, 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to allow The Department of Homeland Security to implement the new public charge rule. The rule expands the meaning of “public charge,” which has long been grounds for inadmissibility in immigration law. The rule also sets a high bar for demonstrating that applicants for legal permanent residence (green cards) and family-based visas will not be dependent on public assistance.
